Cringing in horror as I do every day I see that I have more than 0 unread messages since that God-awful day where I discovered that Mod Laura W muted me for a week because she was bored, I read it. The title was "RuneScape Forums". Oh dear God, what now?

Lo and behold, that piece of garbage named Mod Dave awarded me my final forum strike. This guy made an account and made it a member for the express purpose of becoming a Forum Moderator.

His posts consist entirely of things along the lines of:

Hi [PLAYER],

The information you are looking for is found in the Knowledge Base.

Have a nice day!
Darren

Now, he doesn't do this once, he does it every single time he posts. And now he has a thread in the General forum titled "New to the forums? Look here!". Quickfind Code is: 14-15-444-47269628

What we have here, kids, is 39 pages and counting of pure spam. Oh sure, the first 19 posts are ostensibly some type of "guide" on how to use the forums. But if you look carefully we find that it's a collection of players who are banding together to get this one guy made a mod. Specifically, we see redundant posts like:

This is a fine thread, Darren, you should be very pleased with it. I am confident that not only will the detailed "do"s and "don't"s of the Forums, but also the more subtle aspects included, will benefit newer players the most, which is exactly who this thread is aimed at.

This is a clarifying, thorough, and extremely precise 101 to the RuneScape Forums; well done.

~v~ Jellyfish25 ~v~
And:

The Strawberry Wars, Chronicle II:
____________________________

Darren and Jelly had fought toilsome battles, all in the name of the epic Strawberry. Armed only with a training shield, the bold, brave, and ever so beautiful Jellyfish sat atop his roaring hell cat, to the defiance of Darren.

Darren, riding on a golden "A", commanded his army of "B"s to attack. Who will win?

---

"The Strawberry Chronicles" - sounds like a real thriller!

~v~ Jellyfish25 ~v~

And:

   Lexii 96

11-Jul-2007 14:22:07

There is something about strawberries and teak trees that makes me giggle

Stop making me giggle!

.-=lexii 96=-.

In fact, it seems to be a tightly-knit group of people supporting this moron:
- Lexii 96
- Cup Cake 04
- Jellyfish25
- Rocker 1969

So, I took it to Customer Malsupport. But of course, they did sweet fuck. As is per usual for them.

Alright, it's war then. I posted in the Forum Feedback area this thread: 28-29-117-48239948

Can we please outlaw the threads which are thinly veiled attempts to be noticed as potential mods?

I refer to the threads that are rehashed versions of the Code of Conduct and Forum rules, passed off as "guides".

They are unhelpful and end up filled with spam.
Mod Mark H comes swooping in with this remark:

Well, these threads don't break any rule...
They are not harmful to the community...
And may actually get some players to read the Code of Conduct.

However, as we have always said...attempting to get yourself noticed for moderator status actually lowers your chances of becoming a Moderator.

I doubt we will "outlaw" such threads as they are not doing anything wrong.

However our selection process for Moderating hasn't changed either, so if people want to make these threads I am happy for them to. It shows us a lot about that persons character.

~ MMH ~

And then we have Lord Of The Twits himself coming along:

Thank you Mod Mark (H) for confirming that.

Shadowdancer:

Could you please bear what Mark H has said before you post on my thread in future.

Thanks
However, a half dozen forum mods came along and posted their opposition to such threads and gave me decent support along with a multitude of players.

And then, the other day, I get this message from him:

You tell me.

The Black Hole Experience

http://www.the-bhe.com

If you don't like it then don't fucking go to it. If you dont like the game, the please spare the players that do and just leave quietly. Your negative attitude won't be missed, and your negative comments wont be missed. Is this game perfect, no. But you all seem to lose sight that it is just a game. If you dont like the interaction of other players, then there are tools that you can use to limit you interaction with them. Scammers dont bother me, why? Because I am smart enough to actually check the second trade screen. There are always going to be bad players, just as there are bad people on life. I suggest you learn how to deal with them, are you are in for a terrible life lesson. If you are going to quit, then quit but dont keep coming on this site and constantly bashing. I have meet alot of good people on this site and enjoy the interaction with them. The core of us came here from the Black Hole Experience and there was a reason that we all left their and that Boris started this site. Let try to keep a postive attitude, foster honest game play and be helpfull when we can. We are constantly getting new members to the PigPen and alot of these players are lower levels and could use a better example than we are settinng here lately. You can learn alot from a game. I hope each and everyone of you learns that teamwork, being kind, helpfull and honest is the basics of life."
____________________________________________________________________

I have something to say regarding Sir Gol's post.

First of all, it's real easy to wax poetic on how there's too much bashing on RuneScape. But when you've been around the block as long as I have, (and unless Sir Gol is some kind of insane powerleveller I would surmise he has been around as long as I have) you see a lot of garbage in RuneScape. It becomes even more difficult to maintain a balanced perspective when you are so heavily involved in something like this.

I have always had a problem with the people who post things like "...it's YOUR FAULT for getting scammed." Yeah, right. Because scammers have a legitimate purpose in RuneScape and it serves me right for letting them get the better of me? With that kind of mentality one could argue that laws are infringing on the rights of people to commit crime. I suppose that it's easier for people such as Gol here to shake his head and go "tsk, tsk" and pretend that it's somebody else's problem.

As for the people who post that they are going to quit, they are frustrated and unhappy. I don't mean that they had a bad day and didn't get a whip PK in the Wilderness, I mean they had a BAD DAY, probably the latest in an ongoing stream of bad days (or weeks, or months, or years...). And a lot of the time it's because people view Jagex as being extremely lacklustre in the Customer Support area. I mean, let's face it. How many players do you know that have received a decent level of customer support from Jagex? I'd surmise most of us have not. And is that OUR FAULT for having the audacity to send in a query about why Verac's special ignores prayer that happens to get lost in the shuffle?

I don't think so.

The RuneScape community has been in decline steadily since year one. "But wait," you say, "it only seems like that since RuneScape has expanded so much more". That logic is true but only on an extremely limited basis. Go to the official forums and check out Rants and see how many people post hourly complaining about how they got their account stolen, or that they were offended by somebody going out of their way to make anti-semetic comments in-game and how the player mod standing beside them refused to mute the offender? How about the kids who commit suicide because their so-called "friend" stole their account because of the Santa hat on it? How about the rants of people who post on the forums because their posts/threads got locked/hidden and no explanation by the moderator in question was ever offered forth?

The number of posts in Rants outnumbers the posts in Compliments by FOURTEEN TO ONE! Wake up, people.

You say you're smart enough to actually check the second trade screen. Congratulations, so am I. So are a lot of people but a lot of people are not. Do you take the time to educate other players how to not get scammed in the future? Or do you just sardonically smirk and say to yourself "tough luck kid" and carry on?

I've met a few decent people on RuneScape over my years, but I've become so horribly jaded by my experience on this game that I've all but closed the door on meeting new people because all they seem to want is to be respected by their peers for having said "hi" to me, or to use me for my high levels, or whatever. Nobody actually gives a flip if I'm having a good/bad day.

I've even managed to fall in love over RuneScape with someone that was on the BHE. She knows who she is and there's no need for anyone to ask who it is. All I have to say about that experience is that, lo, it burned me in the end.

And then of course there's Gol's comment about you "all leaving the BHE for a reason and Boris started this site". As far as I'm concerned you left the BHE because you were duped into thinking I was some horrible dictator waiting to crush you all with my unholy administrative powers. At least there you were allowed to use acronyms. You're all welcome, by the way.

And in case anyone doubts that I have anything valid to say regarding the subject, I have an e-mail I would like to share with you all that I sent in to Jagex (yes, I am able to e-mail Jagex if I feel I really need to) detailing my exasperation with this game.

__________________________________________________________________
Courtesy of Boris de Pig, from his Forum Mod days, for volunteering the screenshots I refer to in the following quote.
"This game used to be fun.

My name is Mike O'Hara. My RuneScape identity is "Shadowdancer", a name that I now regret ever conceiving five and a half years later. Nevertheless, I am frustrated to the point that I require composing of my thoughts and sending this off.

A few of you - those who are not employees/owners of Jagex - might be bemused or curious about this message. Or perhaps you don't care. Do what you will with this.

To the Jagex members I've sent this to:
First of all, I am bloody well sick and tired of getting "Unable to send ticket" when I try to send Customer Support a query. And just what is up with the three unreadable messages in my message centre anyways?

But that's not why I write tonight.

Tonight I had an encounter on the forums with some of your moderators. Lady Belinda, Amarra, and Mod Emilee along with probably 90% of the rest of them yelling at me to shut up about an issue I have regarding forum persecution. This was the breaking point for me.
You see, I am constantly being condescended by a group of Forum moderators, Viper21o1 being one of the worst ones. I don't like it, but when I speak out I get told to shut up and take it to CS. I tried, but my existing queries to Mod Peter cannot be deleted because supposedly "a Jagex staff member is looking into this query" or somesuch.

Customer Support has largely disregarded my issues and questions, which basically is tantamount to telling me my input means nothing. Fine, at least tell me as much.

I have gone so far above and beyond the call of duty of a regular RuneScape player, as some of you know. When I first started out during the early months of 2001 I was a frickin' jackass on RuneScape and on the Internet. I remember Paul PMing me in-game to tell me to cool my jets because I was on the forums posting inane and downright frightening things. And he was of course right to do this. I remember getting myself killed in the Wilderness for the first time and wondering why my Varrock Teleport spell failed on me as I died, and promptly quitting the game. I had even given away my password to a friend of mine because I was so thoroughly disgusted. But I came back to it, and reclaimed my account.

September 11, 2001 occurred, and I don't know about you guys in England but over here it was a really (The administrators frown upon bad language) up day. People were living in sheer terror. The events of that day woke me up, and I decided to become a more responsible person on the whole. I smarted up and stopped the idiocy on the forums.

When the pumpkin drop occurred in October, I collected some pumpkins on another account "Stone Rhino", and then after the event was over I did the popular thing and "drop traded" them over to Shadowdancer. Then I read on the forums about how wrong it was to do this thing, and I thought it over. I decided from that moment on I would abide by the game rules and since that day I have never broken another game rule ever. I even gave away the pumpkins to other people (except for one or two I think).

I remember the black hole, and the Black Hole Experience that was put in. I remember opening up my own little business where I collected 5 coal a month from people and in exchange I would go and rescue people who had been scammed into dropping their Disks of Returning while in the hole. :\ Nobody took me up on it, but boy did I bank a ton of disks. I took them PKing with me one day and died though...

I joined some fansite communities. RuneScape Community was my first one, and at first I was welcomed by W13 himself. But over time my personality rubbed against people and I had a hard time with people asking questions that I thought were pretty common sense. People started to "idolize" me while others villainized me. Eventually I was banned for reasons which remain vague to this day.

Prior to my RSC (RuneScape Community, not RuneScape Classic) banning I had opened up something called "ShadowdancerVision", which was basically me using my personal webspace to host screenshots of my RuneScape window which were captured and uploaded every 30 seconds or so. It was a huge hit across the 'net, but eventually after a few months I got tired of not being able to use MSN or other applications at the same time so I abandoned it.

I joined RuneVillage some time later, but experienced the same sort of thing there. I managed to get a story about RuneScape published on their library archive after I got banned from there as well:
http://runevillage.com/theLibrary/shadowdancer/ManAndDragon.php

(By the way, I have a story on the Story forums right now called "Larissa The Sandwich Lady" - at one point I was seriously considering writing a series for each of RuneScape's random events and submitting it to Jagex for consideration)

So it seemed I couldn't get along on fansite communities so I started my own. I dubbed it "The Black Hole Experience", and it managed three incarnations before I pulled the plug for good. It was during this tenure that I started "Scambusters", which was kind of my own way of fighting back against scamming in RuneScape. At first it was just me posting my tips on how to defeat scams and report hack sites to their hosts to get them taken down, but eventually it grew into a team of people. Mod Hulme and Mod Chris E even knew about us, and I would report to CS the billions of scam sites we managed to stumble upon.

The BHE - my forum, that is - collapsed for the third time due to internal strife and pressures, and another fansite sprung up from the ashes. Or more accurately, the admins from the BHE defected to make a fansite forum without me. This is called the RuneScape Pigpen, run by Boris de Pig. It is a hack site, but nobody seems to listen to me when I say that. A hack site springs up from my fansite. Irony.

Boris de Pig, last I heard, was a player moderator. More irony.

I managed to somehow attract the attention of a certain person named "Skaarjnick", who has apparently made it a goal of his teenage years to dub me some kind of RuneScape account thief. His reasons for this is because of my efforts to stop people who do this sort of thing in the first place. To this very day I get random PMs from people who say that "I" hacked so-and-so's account (often from Skaarjnick himself posing as the victim, the twisted fool). I used to get riled up over this but eventually I became so jaded that I just don't even respond any longer to these accusations.

Speaking of account theft, I managed to have my account taken twice a year and some months back during the so-called "line of duty" in investigating scam sites and reporting them to Customer Support. A hazard of loyalty I suppose, but apparently Jagex holds this against me and this is one of a billion vague reason why despite all I have done and continue to do I am not considered worthy to be a moderator - in either sense. But I'll come to that in a moment.

RuneScape has become poisonous to me, gents. I love this game, but I also desperately hate it so, and I've told many people this repeatedly. I despondently sit in this wooden chair and click my mouse. Walk there. Build larder. Tear larder down. Rebuild larder. Exit house. Run to bank. Withdraw 24 planks. Run back to house. Click friend. Say "hi, i wish i could stop playing this game but i need a construction level". Hit ENTER. Right-click larder. Tear larder down. Build larder. Reb--God, somebody smash my computer tower or something. When I'm out at work or volunteering at my church (yeah, I'm a Christian, kinda freakin' ironic eh?), I sometimes wander to thinking how far off level 98 Smithing is, or why my post got locked, or why my abuse reports never get looked at, or...

So what do I do to relieve the addiction? I log into the forums. Hoo boy. I'd like to state that the RuneScape forums, for me, have never been very kind to me except for the time when I had my thread in Rants stickied titled "0700 GMT - Cant Log In?". Gosh, I was tickled pink. I thought to myself "maybe Jagex will invite me to be a mod here, and I can do my bit to improve the community". But....no... Well heck, fine. I mean, I post so many decent posts and answer questions and provide intelligent arguments (read: debates, not flames) and am active on the forums. Except, that one fateful day a few months back where I happened to be logged in, and there was a bug where everybody was (briefly) a Jagex mod. I thought I had gone to bed and was dreaming about being on the forums...everyone was wreaking havoc everywhere. But I wasn't. I had merely gone to my forum profile, and instead of where I usually see "Posts by Shadowdancer - this is you" or whatever, I saw my good post/bad post count...uh, yeah...so much for decent posts and a "valued member of the community", as CS once wrote me. I made a single post in general telling people to please ignore the moderator functions which were suddenly made available to us and that it was a bug. Yup, responsible me.

My tenure on the forums has been very cruel. I've been misunderstood, insulted, had my posts hidden and threads locked/hidden with no explanation more times than I care to remember. I do recall seeing a screenshot of Robd75 posting in your private forum mod forums called "Admin Lounge" (I believe) saying that I was a horrible person and should never be made mod, ever.

To this day Robd75 is still a forum mod, and the kicker is that he's not ever around anymore.

In-game, I see so much childishness. Now, I am not so naieve to expect that only adults will play an MMORPG, especially one as kid-oriented (and RuneScape is kid-oriented as far as I can see) as this one. But it's in such sheer quantities. Whenever I reveal to people my age, with VERY rare exception, I am mocked for my age. I don't mind that so much. It's the horrible amount of taunting and spamming and macroing and insulting and cheating and bug abusing that ruins the experience for me so much. And the fact that I am talked down to on the forums, and my queries to CS are met with silence or disdain, and the fact that I only get noticed for the "negative" and no amount of good I do will ever mean jack squat.

RuneScape is going to put me in my grave soon, I feel."
__________________________________________________________________

Oh, I still play RuneScape. But a lot of you folks there at the Pigpen have caused me not a little bit of grief with your uninformed opinions of me thanks to certain people. I am, as they say, horribly addicted and nothing I feel except for getting killed in a car crash or something will save me from RuneScape.

I'll see you on the other side.

Bullocks

Today I said the word "Bullocks" on the RuinedScape official forums. This would turn out to be a deadly error.

Apparently there in England "Bullocks" is an offensive term. I always thought it meant "nonsense", so I went ahead and posted something saying that something or other was bullocks (meaning "that is nonsense").

Now, much to my surprise, Wizardio4 hides the post and tells me not to use offensive language or I'll be banned.

What...the...hell...?

Of course, I get a message in my message centre saying I was reported for saying "bullocks", don't do it again, blah freaking blah. So I posted on Forum Feedback asking what was up.

Sure enough, Mod Burgess posts saying I was spelling around the censor. Uh, no. No I was not. I explain that I used a word that had no offensive connotation to it, and then he/she is like "ah I didn't know it wasn't offensive in American English, sorry for the confusion".

Yeah, thanks. Thanks for the warning anyways.

I hate RuneScape.

So What Is Shadowdancer Up To?

I figured I owed the general public an explanation as to what I've been up to in RuneScape.

The simple truth of the matter is this: I'm hardcore Construction-based right now and will probably remain so until December, unless a new skill comes out before then.

I am steaming along to 90 Construction so I can build my house up and have massive parties in the wine cellar. With Evil Dave Stew and that new-ish Crystal saw, I can't go wrong.

Of course, cutting 50,000 oak logs and making them into planks is making me crazier than ever, but whatever.

Oh, and a new community site is going to be launched by October 1. Yeah. Minor footnote there.

The Hall Of Lame Revisited

One aspect of the Black Hole Experience was that there was a special place for exposing the cream of the crap when it comes to RuneScape. I heard about this on the forums earlier today and didn't think twice about it, but then something in the back of my mind told me to investigate. Since ignoring the voices in the back of my mind usually gets me in trouble, I decided to do so. And what did I find? A mess.

For those of you too lazy/stupid to click the link above, a marketing firm called WildTangent has partnered with Jagex Limited AH FFS I'LL JUST COPY N PASTE IT:
_______________________________________________________
"WildTangent, Jagex's RuneScape Ink Deal

Mike Shields

JULY 13, 2006 -

WildTangent, one of the top publishers of casual, Web-based games, has signed a deal with the U.K.-based game publisher Jagex Ltd. to sell advertising within RuneScape, one of the most popular "MMOGs" - or Massively Multiplayer Online Games.

RuneScape is one an increasingly popular group of strategy/fantasy games such as World of Warcraft, The Sims or Everquest which are intensely played by millions worldwide. According to Jagex, the medieval adventure-themed RuneScape is played by 9 million unique users each month, with roughly 4 million of those users coming from the U.S. Until now, the four-year-old game has not featured any advertising.

Now, Wild Tangent has begun selling both video and banner sponsorships to run before game sessions of RuneScape, as well as in-between levels of the game. According to Wild Tangent executive vp of sales, Dave Madden, product placement with actual game play - an increasingly popular tactic when marketing to gamers, will not be employed as part of the deal, thus to not disrupt RuneScape's inherent medieval fantasy.

Initially, WildTangent has signed on several top name brands to run ads in RuneScape, including Coca-Cola, Sony Entertainment and the U.S. Navy.

For WildTangent, the deal should expand the the reach of it's advertising network significantly. Currently, Wild Tangent games, which are baked into all new Dell, HP, Toshiba PCs as well as being available online, reach over 4 million users per month; the RuneScape deal has the potential to more than double that number . In addition, according to Madden, RuneScape, which primarily appeals to 14-24-year-olds, should broaden the networks appeal to advertisers, since many existing Wild Tangent game skew towards women in their 30s and 40s."
_______________________________________________________

Great. Now whenever you get that Fletching level, you can look forward to advertisements for Coca-Cola.

But Jagex eschews people on the Suggestions forum posting ideas about guns and horses.

I for one am heavily opposed to this. If I wanted to buy a Coke, I'll log out of the damn game and walk/bike/drive to the store around the corner and buy one. I get spammed enough via e-mail, I don't need to be inundated in-game with junk mail adverts.

I am therefore reserving this blog post as an unofficial petition to halt this madness. If you hate me or have some other personal grudge against me, I would ask that you put that aside long enough to sign here via the comments page if you value your RuneScape gaming experience.

Spread the word however you can. That sounds suspiciously like....aaargggh...

...another minigame.

It seems that minigames are being pumped out to almost "justify" the fact that we have skill levels in the first place these days.

We just had a minigame about bootlegging rum (I won't even go into the moral implication where a MMORPG is teaching its typically very young audience that brewing moonshine is a rewarding and jail-free activity) this month already. Another one?

I haven't been to the new pyramid, but if past minigames is any indication this could well turn into a forgotten about area in a week or two at longest.

Speaking of forgotten realms, why can't Jagex focus its efforts on building up the areas that were already released but nobody, and I mean NOBODY, bothers with? Prifddinas has been ignored for 2 years now. The digsite is also neglected completely, and that hasn't been used since the RSC days.

Sure, I recognize that pumping out quests constantly is demanding, but at least quests drive the various storylines/subplots within the game itself. Minigames on the other hand really don't serve a function in RuneScape other than to be short-term distractions. Trouble Brewing is completely deserted on most servers, but I guess Jagex is bolstered by the success of Pest Control, and one could argue that Castle Wars is also successful (if not the most infamous).

Enough please. Expands the existing landscape. Bring some of the towns and NPCs we haven't seen in so long to life again. Give us a reason to re-explore.

Larissa The Sandwich Lady

I posted a story I wrote on the official forums. Yes, I know, I said I'd never go back. But I did. Bite me.

Quick find code: 49-50-84-26413709

I'll copy it here:
__________________________________________________________________
Larissa hated her job.

She worked as an assistant to the head chef of the Duke of Lumbridge Castle. She came in and worked long hours in the kitchen preparing all kinds of sandwiches and cold cuts for the Duke's social gatherings, meetings and other such functions.

"No, you idiot!!!!" the chef would scream at her, "you put too much mustard on the ham sandwiches! They're ruined! Start over!" He would often take her creations and throw them against the wall, or on the ground and stomp on them, forcing her to clean up the resulting mess and then start over from scratch.

At first she would get upset, complaining to Hans during her breaks. Hans would just kind of stand there with his hands in his pocket and ask people going into the castle if they had a few coins to spare.

"He's AWFUL," Larissa sobbed one day, "he yells at me and makes me feel so inferior, and we end up wasting so much meat and bread...ugh..."
"Yeah," Hans replied in a monotone voice, "so when you get paid, can you, um, lend me a few coins? The store up the road is selling some new security book I wanna read..."
Larissa just sighed and walked back into the castle.

And so her days went. She would spend the greater part of the day making all kinds of sandwiches, and not just any sandwich mind you - all kinds, such as triangle sandwiches, ham sandwiches, baguettes, kebabs, bread rolls, and many more. Larissa considered herself a "sandwich artist", and when she said so to the Chef he merely narrowed his eyes at her and huffed.

She vowed one day that she would become the greatest sandwich lady in Asgarnia - no, the world!

Months passed, and then one bright sunny day Larissa arrived to work, and saw an announcement on the kitchen noteboard:

BY ORDER OF HORACIO
DUKE OF LUMBRIDGE CASTLE
THERE IS TO BE A GREAT BANQUET HELD IN THE MAIN DINING HALL
AT HIGH NOON
PREPARE THE FOLLOWING:
- 75 assorted sandwiches
- 10 calquat kegs of Dwarven Stout
- 30 cooked chicken
- 5 Redberry Pies

"Get to work! We have much work to do and only a few hours to do it in!" The Chef said to her without looking up from his range.

Larissa sighed. It would take all of her skill and concentration to make the sandwiches. She went to the basement to get the flour.

As she was making her way around with her lantern, she nearly tripped over something. It was a pouch. She knelt down and examined it - it was the type that Runecrafters used to haul Rune Essence through the Abyssal portal in the Wilderness. She opened it and found some runes in it.
"Wow," she said, "a mage must have dropped this down here. Probably an adventurer checking out on those 'Dorgunnshen' goblins or whatever they are." She looked over her shoulder, but saw no-one there. She stuffed the pouch in her pocket and resumed her hunt for flour.

The day wore on, and Larissa made sandwich after sandwich after sandwich. The chef was under more stress than usual, claiming to have enlisted the aid of some "Adventurer" to help fetch the more exotic ingredients for the banquet. Eventually, all was in order and the guests began to arrive. The chef and Larissa served the food, and everything was met with critical acclaim.

Nevertheless, the chef found reason to berate Larissa in the kitchen; she had forgotten to clean up the shelves and had left the excess meat outside of the larder. She was about ready to grab his meat cleaver and make a sandwich out of him, but she refrained, and managed to endure the abuse before retiring for the day.

As she left, she said to herself: "Someday soon, I will get my recognition..."

Shadowdancer aimed another arrow at the flying piece of rock, but it bounced off like the other two before it.

"Blast," he muttered, "there has to be a weakness in their hide somewhere..."

He nocked another arrow and aimed again, and released. The arrow managed to chip off some of the beast's skin. It let out a growl but remained hovering in its place, seemingly unable to close the distance to retaliate with its claws and fangs (which was probably a good thing for Shadowdancer).

After several more arrows, the Gargoyle was near death. However, he was perplexed as to why it wouldn't die. Then he remembered Duradel's last words to him: "They need to be dealt the killing blow from a Rock Hammer." Aha. Shadowdancer reached into his pack on the ground beside him and pulled out the rock hammer and charged at the beast. He ducked as it took a swipe at him and he swung the hammer at its midsection.

At first nothing happened, then cracks appeared at the point of impact and spider-webbed outwards, then it disintegrated in a puff of dust, causing Shadowdancer to cover his mouth with the end of his Fire Cape.

"Oh look, an oversized Cricket Mallet," he muttered as we walked over and fished out the Granite Maul from the Gargoyle's remains. He grimaced at it. It wasn't actually that bad of a weapon, but for a warrior of his calibre it was not worth using. "I can probably give it away at the next Varrock Charity Auction..." he mumbled aloud, setting it beside his pack.

He looked around. The slayer tower was anything but inviting. Nechryaels wandered around nearby, and the Abyssal Demons were at it again, partying it up and teleporting around like Law Runes were going out of style.

Shadowdancer fished his Enchanted Gem out of his tunic and rubbed it, opening a magical communication link to Duradel, his assigned Slayer master. He failed to notice the portal opening behind him, however...

Larissa walked through the portal and appeared in the top floor of the Slayer Tower. In front of her was a pile of grey dust, and in front of that was a figure with his back turned to her, apparently talking to himself.

She gingerly stepped around the pile of dust, with her sandwich tray suspended in front of her and put on her best smile and waited for the figure to turn around and notice her.

"...you're doing great, Shadowdancer, " said a distorted voice, "you only have 50 more Gargoyles to kill, then you can come back and get your next task from me."

"I hope you're not thinking of sending me to fight more metal dragons, Duradel," Shadowdancer groaned, "they are such a nuisance to deal with."

The voice through the gem paused. "You don't know what those Iron Dragons did to my family, Shadowdancer. I won't rest until they are all dead. ALL DEAD!!!"

"Okay, chill out. Take a swim in the Shilo river big guy."

"Sorry. Just please don't question my Slayer assignments to you."

"Right. Back to killing Gargoyles I go." Shadowdancer pocketed the gem and turned around, and nearly started when he saw Larissa the Sandwich Lady in front of him.

Larissa just stood there smiling, then said "Sandwiches, Shadowdancer? You look rather hungry."

Shadowdancer blinked in disbelief. "How did you get here?"

"I saw that you were hungry and came to give you a sampling of my sandwiches. I formerly worked for the Chef in Lumbridge Castle before he had an...accident..." her smile widened a bit when she said 'accident', "...so I decided to expose the world to my talents. Won't you try a baguette?"

Shadowdancer looked around him, then at her. "Are you serious?"

"Very."

"Well...alright," he peered into her sandwich tray and saw several sandwiches. However, he had never seen a baguette before, so he reached for what he hoped might be one and took a bite.

"Hey! That's NOT A BAGUETTE!!!" Larissa screamed. Suddenly she advanced on him...

Larissa handed the Shantay Guard her pass and waited for him to approve her passage into the desert. He eyed her up and down.

"So you formerly were a sandwich maker and now you want to go to the Bedabin camp?" he said.

"Yes," she replied, "I have a sampling of my latest sandwiches to bring to them but I must hurry before the heat spoils them.

The guard looked skeptical. "Alright, I suppose. You are familiar with the hazards of the desert? Sand storms, vicious Ugthanki camels, desert wolves, rampaging nomad and bandits..."

"Yes yes, thank you." she cut him off. She took her disclaimer and walked through the pass with her sack over her shoulder and walked into the desert.

After a few hundred steps she set down her pack and opened it, and dumped an unconscious Shadowdancer onto a sand dune.

"This will teach you to eat the wrong sandwich my dear!" she said to him, patting his forehead. Then she pulled out a teleportation tablet and broke it, cackling with what was probably insane glee as she shrunk into a purple ball and vanished.

--------------------------------

"Urrrgh"...

The Ugthanki licked Shadowdancer's face again.

"Stop that, you know I'm not your type..." he mumbled.

The camel snorted and walked away.

Shadowdancer then got an inkling that something was wrong. He opened his eyes and immediately confirmed this suspicion.

"This isn't the Slayer tower...what the?" he got to his feet. His bow and arrows were missing as were his pack.

"What a nightmare. Some crazy sandwich lady came and offered me a sandwich, then attacked me...but why am I here?"

Suddenly his Enchanted Gem buzzed. He reached for it.
"Yeah?"

"So how soon are you going to polish off those Gargoyles?

Shadowdancer looked up from the gem and around. He saw an Ugthanki camel staring him in the face.

"Might be awhile, Duradel. Might be awhile..."
__________________________________________________________________

Capture The Flag, And Hide With It

Let's suppose you were sent away to camp for a week and one of the many games the camp counsellors from Hell made you play was Capture The Flag.

So you get a velcro-belt with a flag attached to it and move to your side of the divided territory and wait for the referee(s) to give the "Start" signal. They do, and your teammates dash across the line into enemy territory to seek out the flag and return it to your own side.

You, however, are a crafty fox. Forget crossing the enemy line; you're too cool for that. Instead, you turn around and go towards your own flag! That's right, you'll capture your own flag and run around with it to prevent the other team from ever finding it. Ha! Take that!

This apparently seems to be the strategy behind anyone who plays that awful madness known as Castle Wars. Castle Wars is the fucking worst multiplayer co-operative minigame ever, bar none. Pest Control and Fight Pits are miles above this one.

Nevermind the fact that most people who play are too incompetent to leave the starting room floor - I can deal with those. It's the twits who wait for someone from the opposite team to come grab the flag, and then cut that person down and grab the flag from them and then run and hide someplace.

Capture The Flag and Hide And Seek do not mix, people.

The strategy behind this is to prevent the other team from ever finding the flag, effectively preventing them from scoring. This is lame as hell. To counteract this, I propose that when the flag is grabbed from its spawn point, a 1 minute countdown timer begins. When that counter reaches 0, the flag detonates dealing 150 damage to the player carrying it, and the flag respawns at its home base.

That is all.

KBD Decapitated 3x

I have accomplished a goal I set out to do a week ago - I have slain the King Black Dragon by myself and claimed its 3 heads for a trophy!

Yeah.

What, you were expecting a 500+ word diatribe?

Treasure Trails Are A Waste Of Time

Fine.

I got a clue scroll from an Abyssal Demon. Some of you out there will think I have an axe to grind against certain people, which is not true. If you like to live in a fantasy world where nothing bad ever happens within a 500 mile radius of you at all times, then discontinue reading NOW.
______________________________________________________

The following takes place between 10:30PM and 11:10PM.
______________________________________________________

Once upon a time, this web log (blog, for you laypeople) was actually a dedicated fansite of mine. I used to update it nightly, which took up a considerable amount of my spare time. Eventually I set back to once a week, then not at all and deleted everything except for the forum, otherwise known as The Black Hole Experience.

Some of you will be familiar with this forum, others will not. I ran it for a few years before I accidentally blew it up one April day while trying to upgrade the security. Well, rebuild time. The second version was disabled due to various internal strife among certain shit-disturbers. The third version should never have existed at all, but black holes are unstable stellar entities and are therefore funny like that when it comes to existential laws.

I will talk about V2 of the BHE briefly before delving into my rant of the evening. As the forum grew in size, I felt it necessary to promote certain individuals to the rank of administrator to help deal with troublesome users and the like. Three other such persons made the rank over time - their names save for one are not relevent to this post so I won't bother mentioning them.

At some point during V2's run, my RuneScape account was compromised. Somebody had manipulated the way phpBB stores the passwords in the database, and began running comparisons to RuneScape accounts. Silly me, I had my RuneScape password the same as my BHE password. Several people attempted to hail me via MSN but of course I was asleep during the day because I worked at night. This was before Jagex invented bank PINs so my items were of course stolen. But I didn't care about that quite so much.

What did bother me was the fact that somebody was able to do this in the first place. After I recovered the account I launched my own investigation and found that the IP came from Takas University in Lithuania. Who the hell would hack me from Lithuania, I thought to myself. Well, anyway, someone on my MSN list named Nmap (named himself after the port scanning tool used for hacking, how ironic...) was only too eager to help me locate the people responsible. I thought nothing of it at the time and he had his own list of people who might have been involved. Some "leads" were followed but they didn't match out, and even Jagex didn't agree with the "evidence" I was bringing them, which was when alarm bells started to go off in my head.

I started to question myself about who could have had the ability to do this sort of thing. I found out that Nmap had quite an array of illict software/methods for forcing passwords and such. Having exhausted all other possibilities, I began to ask him why he was just so interested in helping me in the first place. He said he was an "admirer" of mine from back in the day when I was active at another fansite called RuneVillage. I found this dubious, but didn't say anything.

The trail went cold after a few weeks, and it seemed that whoever stole my account had gotten away with it.

Enter Boris De Pig, former BHE admin, current RuneScape Pigpen site owner and former friend.

Boris was on my MSN list for a long time, and was one of the first people who had learned of my account being stolen. I had discussed with him my every thought, and what I was doing to try to find out who did it. He was supposedly supportive to a degree, but never really too eager to get involved in helping me out (which was fine). Then one day, I reveal to him my suspicions about Nmap and how he told me about his ties to the hacking underground. By this point, mind you, the BHE had been closed and the RSPP had opened in its place, basically a "BHE copycat" forum. (Boris had left the BHE a month before claiming to go on "vacation" but had in fact opened the Pigpen in secret and invited all the people on my staff except for me...just what did he have to hide anyways?) Boris attempted to tell me that Nmap was innocent of having any involvement in stealing my account, which I thought was rather strange of him to say considering that up to that point I had yet to outright accuse him. This led to a heated discussion which culminated in him actually bothering to phone me from England to convince me that Nmap did not do it. "Then who?" I asked him, to which he had no reply.

A side note here...back in December I finally lost my patience with Nmap and went all-out on getting this guy prosecuted. I eventually tracked him down to Parkville, Maryland, USA and contacted the authorities there and presented them with the evidence I had gathered. I am unaware of what precisely happened beyond that.

A month or so goes by, and people on the RSPP start complaining about being hacked. Skjoldfetter (RuneScape name) was a victim of Nmap's preditions, and he outright admitted it when confronted. He took her password from the RSPP database the same way my account got stolen. Boris De Pig did not ban him from the site, saying that there's "no point since he can just get around anything I do", which quite frankly is a load of bullshit. At least make the effort you dumb fuck. Ahem. Then Enjoi Shadow (RuneScape name) also loses his account from the Pigpen. Jury's still out on this one, but Nmap remains unbanned.

And then finally, this past Friday, Jumpeplowski gets his account stolen. I spoke to him at length about it and there was no keylogger, nobody watching him log in, nobody sending him to a look-a-like site or anything.

Skjoldfetter, Enjoi Shadow and Jumpeplowski are all former BHE users who went over to the RSPP. They all had their accounts stolen since making that switch. Others have lost their accounts there as well but I cannot bring their names to memory so I am unable to cite them as specific examples.

"So Shadowdancer," some of you are surely pondering, "what makes you certain Boris De Pig is involved?". Glad you asked. It should be rather obvious, but I will connect the dots for you regardless:
- Boris De Pig has fansite for people to go to
- Nmap is allowed access, despite being proven a hacker
- People start losing their accounts via the Pigpen. Boris does next to nothing to beef up security; Nmap is still allowed access
- Anyone see a fucking pattern yet?

The question remains "why"? Simple. eBay. The underground market. People sell RuneScape accounts for real money.

It is my estimation that the RSPP is not an honest fansite at all but rather a front for an account-stealing business. Harsh? Perhaps. But I really cannot fathom why else Boris lets this sort of thing continue.

I closed the BHE permanently for a number of reasons; one of them because of the apparently inherent security flaws in phpBB in the first place.

You can choose to heed this warning or ignore it, but stay the hell away from that place.

Zelda > RuneScape

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is more fun than RuinedScape. I'll list several reasons why this is so:

- TLoZ has no scammers in it (except for Sakon the thief)
- When you save your game and shut the N64 off, people won't try to steal your items or save game file
- I don't have to worry about getting random punishments from Nintendo when I go to play
- When I go to buy Chateau Romani, the price will remain the same - it won't go up in 2 weeks
- TLoZ has hearts in it. RuneScape has hits. Why can't Jagex put Heart Containers in the game? And Pieces of Heart when we solve quests?

Yeah. Zelda is better than RuneScape, for now. Stress reliever.

In other news, I have been playing RuneScape, but I am burned out still. I've been going to Varrock on freeplay servers and looking for people doing naughty things. Of course, there's no end to them...

What really burns my bacon is when there's a Player Moderator nearby and people are account selling, password scamming and basically breaking as many rules as they can and the P-Mod is completely oblivious to the activity. So many people want the position to do good for this game and yet Jagex recruits the lazy ones.

I really don't get it.

Look out, Skull Kid. I'm coming for you next.

To Hell With The Forums

Today I logged out of the forums for the absolute last time ever. It is nothing more than a mass of flaming spam and Gestapo moderators drunk with power.

I present you a sampling of tonight's stupidity:

"But Shadow," someone pleaded with me, "you have a lot to offer..." please...I post daily pretty much, and get the same old garbage thrown back at me - either someone else accuses me of being a wannabe moderator, my information is somehow inaccurate despite proving to them that it is in fact accurate, my information is simply ignored, or my post gets hidden and instead some idiot mod who never heard of RuneScape before 2006 posts his answer in its place. Fuck that shit...I'm so outta there.

And I really couldn't care less what Jagex or anybody else thinks anymore about that. The forums are a mess because they refuse to dedicate proper moderating staff; instead they recruit moderators from players by some kind of arcane procedure. They tell you, if you ask, that moderators are selected based on the quality of their posts. Do you hear that? That's the Bullshit-O-Meter going off.

The forum moderators that get picked appear out of nowhere. I'm dead serious. Go check out the current Forum Mod list, and pick a name you see. Now take that name and search throughout the forums for any threads and/or posts by that person that are not of a moderator capacity. Go on, I'll wait. Didn't find any? Hmm. Pick another name and try again. None again? How bizarre, how bizarre...

But if you were to post on the forums for years on end expending time and effort into trying to help people out and share your experiences with others to try to enhance the community, you'll be overlooked.

Now, for those of you who are thinking "Pfft you just want to be a mod": Go fuck a mole. I've been posting since the forums first came online and have yet to become a moderator, so if you think that's my motivation then think again.

I'm just finally sick of putting in and getting little out in return. My threads get spammed, or ignored, or hidden. Jagex picks their forum mods out of hats it seems and doesn't check up on their actions ever, short of a massive complaint or something.

To hell with the forums. I'm forumless from now on.

Warrior's Guild? I earned some tokens and tried to kill some Cyclops, but guess what? It was overcrowded and I spent more time standing around seeing "Somebody else is fighting that." than actually killing anything.

I eventually got pissed off and dropped my tokens and left, never to return. I'm too cool for defenders.

In other news, I went through about 7 million coins for updating my house. I now have a maxed-out Chapel and a dungeon, complete with an Oubliette, 2 corridors leading north and a Demon guarding the treasure room. Pretty spiffy.

I'll be holding an open house any day now, probably Sunday evening. I'm currently spending 1.1 million coins on making oak logs into oak planks.

WARNING: The rest of this post is spam.
r9g358yjh[oi4'u690k75eje5oph690tmkthjoi'tu5i5776o76
o76
i5
i75ei
u6k9hrej89sfduipogu5y64]
57i
9ke[0rjh]eh[e
PANCAKES
569uyh40[64j9sht
;th4j6]4jh5]hja
54u46
u46
u64
u46t
hhdg
ngfij89-35u yoi53ky6io4'ku4

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://shadowdancer-rs.blogspot.com/2006/06/warriors-guild-bah.html' title='Warrior's Guild? So of course I've been on a Construction rampage (ha...hahaha...hahahahahaha...yeah, I know). After ordering Larry, my Demon Butler, to make me some tea I was able to upgrade my Chapel and install my Oubliette under my throne room. Castle Shadowdancer is indeed looking mighty spiffy. Of course, I'm at 17/20 rooms, which means by the time I connect the oubliette with the intended room with the stairs I'll have exactly 1 spare room left over to place either a Skills hall (or Quest hall - I have one or the other but not both; I can't remember which at the moment).

Wanna see my house layout? I'll draw it out for ya:

I am considering investing in some more Gold Leaf and Marble Blocks in the near future.

The "Massacre" & Offense Tracker

Right. I was told late last evening by I M Tpl that there was some kind of "PKing" bug or something going round. As usual, I ignored it because I'm a very jaded person and quite frankly don't believe any rumors I hear at all. However, it was a reality. Apparently someone named "Cursed You", the first person to reach level 99 Construction (how the hell does someone level a skill from 1 to 99 in 6 days? Seriously...) invited people to his house so he could show off his dungeon. Well, people were able to fight one another outside of the PvP mode, and then he kicked them out of the house and then they were killing everyone everywhere.

Consider this:

In other news, as of today I had 7.5 blackmarks on my game account. This was all the proof I'll ever need that Jagex is out to get me. I sent in a complaint query to ask what that was all about, and hours later I get a message back titled "Re: Your RuneScape Account". The message told me that I had new offenses added and that I should log into the new Offense/Ban Tracker to review them. I did so, only to find the blackmarks removed.

What a stressful day.

Mahogany Woes

It's been awhile...

I've been, of course, working on levelling the latest skill. I think partly the reason is because I saw someone on the official forums that they had 71,000+ Mahogany logs, which is JUST FREAKING INSANE. So to that end, I decided to make nails and bronze wire.

Just in case.

In other news, I got level 93 Cooking. I actually got it by accident, as someone else on the forums was posting a "bug" on server 111 west of the fishing guild that someone was "mysteriously" able to range 2 Moss Giants at once and this was therefore bug abuse. After trying to reason with the silly girl for 20 minutes I decided to look, just in case. Sure enough, there was someone ranging 2 giants at once from beyond their reach. Not bug abuse; just being a jerk.

I promptly said "right" and walked back east. And decided to mine a couple hundred sharks on the spot and fry 'em up.

If this week's update isn't Construction/POHs then feel free to harrass me in-game to buy my 105 Rune nails.

Levle 89 Slayer

Yeah.

More Slayer...

That's right. The fun thing about trying to kill Steel Dragons when you first arrive is that the Iron Dragons always interfere, forcing you to either fight them or run clear across the way in the hopes of outrunning their breath attack long enough to attack a Steel Dragon.

Then it was off to the Slayer Tower to kill Bloodvelds. Blood Runes galore. Whenever possible I try to Range my Slayer tasks as I have raised my melee and magic to 99 already. Here I am...

This is the cursory first post when someone creates a web log, journal, whatever. Hooray.

I'm Shadowdancer from RuneScape. If you don't know what RuneScape is, this web log will make little to no sense to you. Check out RuneScape.

Today, I logged into RuneScape and collected my rewards from the new-and-improved Miscellania-Etceteria kingdom. I managed to collect an array of seeds and herbs, but had to remove 19 pieces of junk from my bank first. Jagex really ought to make it so we can simply take the items from Grimm directly and let us decide what is worthy of bank space and what is not.

Then I decided that rather return to my Turoth slayer task, I should go to Ape Atoll and level up Agility. Why?
